What wardrobe design actually involves

Wardrobe work is mostly about what happens inside. The shutter is what you see, but the layout behind it — hanging heights, drawer depths, how much long-hang you actually need — is what decides whether the wardrobe is useful. We start by counting what you own, not by drawing a standard module: saree stacks, suit lengths, how many folded shirts, whether there are duvets to store.

Construction is either carcass-built (a boxed unit placed against the wall) or wall-mounted with a shutter system. Carcass is more robust and handles uneven walls better, which matters in older Pune buildings where no wall is truly straight.

Full-height is almost always the right call. The loft above a 7-foot wardrobe collects dust and becomes unreachable; taking joinery to the slab gives usable storage and looks deliberate.

Included as standard

  • Walk-in closets
  • Glass & lacquer shutters
  • Internal lighting
  • Loft storage
  • Photo-real 3D design before anything is produced
  • Itemised, material-wise quotation
  • A dedicated project manager and site supervisor
  • Installation, written snag list and handover

Options

Wardrobe types, and when each is right

The choice here constrains everything after it, so it is the first thing we settle.

Hinged (openable)

The default. You see the entire interior at once, shutters cost less, and you get full-depth shelves. Needs clear swing space in front.

Sliding

Narrow rooms where a swinging shutter would hit the bed. Costs more, you only ever see half the wardrobe, and about 60–80 mm of internal depth goes to the track.

Walk-in

Where a room or a deep recess can be given over to it, usually 35 sq ft upward. Open shelving plus a dressing area; the cheapest storage per square foot once the room exists.

Bridge / over-bed unit

Compact bedrooms. Storage over the headboard links two side units and recovers the floor the wardrobe would have taken.

Specification

What we specify, and why it matters

Most of this is invisible once the work is finished, which is exactly why it is where quotes differ.

18 mm MR ply carcass, BWP where it meets an external wall

Wardrobes against external walls take monsoon damp through the masonry. The back panel is where that shows up first.

Moisture-barrier backing and a ventilated plinth

A sealed box against a damp wall is how clothes start to smell. Air has to be able to move behind and beneath the unit.

Soft-close hinges; telescopic channels rated to the drawer load

Drawers full of clothing are heavier than people expect. Underrated channels sag and then stop closing square.

2 mm PVC edge-banding on every exposed edge

Edges are what hands and hangers hit. Thin banding peels at the corner within a couple of years and cannot be patched invisibly.

Internal LED strip on a door sensor

A deep wardrobe is dark at the back regardless of the room lighting. This is a small cost that changes daily use.

Cost

What wardrobe design costs, and where the money goes

Three specification tiers, then the line items that make up any quote in this category.

PackageRange (per sq ft)Specification
Essential₹1,200 – ₹2,350Laminate hinged shutters, branded hinges, shelf-and-rod internals
Premium₹2,350 – ₹2,975Acrylic or lacquered glass, soft-close and telescopic internals, internal lighting
Luxury₹2,975 – ₹3,500+PU or imported finishes, walk-in configuration, full internal fit-out

Indicative ranges for wardrobe design across Pune, PCMC and Western Maharashtra, at sq ft level. Nothing here is a quotation — final cost depends on size, site condition, specification and your own brand choices.

Where the money goes

Carcass & shutters

50–60%

Priced by the square foot of elevation. Full-height costs more and stores far more.

Internal fittings

15–25%

Drawers, pull-outs, trouser racks, mirror units. Specify against what you own.

Hardware

10–18%

Hinges or the sliding system. Sliding track quality is the whole experience.

Finish & detailing

8–15%

Laminate, acrylic, lacquered glass or mirror; profile handles or handle-less grooves.

Indicative shares of a typical project in this category. Your own split will shift with specification and site condition.

What pushes the cost up

  • Sliding systems, which cost more than hinged for less usable depth
  • Lacquered glass or mirror shutters
  • Full-height units taken to the slab
  • Dense internal fit-out: pull-outs, racks, jewellery drawers

Where you can genuinely save

  • Hinged shutters instead of sliding
  • Open shelving inside rather than a drawer bank
  • Laminate over acrylic and glass
  • One well-planned wardrobe instead of storage on every wall

What a suspiciously cheap quote has usually left out

  • Back panel reduced to 6 mm or skipped against the wall
  • Loft section quoted separately after the fact
  • Generic hinges with no soft-close and no warranty
  • Internal fittings listed as 'standard accessories' with no schedule

Price differences in this trade are almost always specification differences. Ask any quote to name the material grade and hardware brand line by line.

How to choose

The decisions people actually get stuck on

Each one has a recommendation and the condition under which it flips. No balanced shrugs.

Sliding or hinged?

Hinged, unless the room physically cannot take a swinging shutter. It is cheaper, deeper, and you can see everything you own at once.

Flips when — Go sliding when the bed or a walkway sits within about 600 mm of the wardrobe face.

Full-height or wardrobe plus loft?

Full-height to the slab, with the top section on its own shutters. It is the same money and you can actually reach it.

Flips when — A separate loft makes sense only where a false ceiling or beam breaks the run anyway.

Delivery plan

15–30 days, phase by phase

Measured from design sign-off. Factory production and site work overlap, which is why the total is shorter than the sum of its parts.

Local reality

Apartment projects run inside society work hours, usually around 10am to 6pm on weekdays. Independent houses have no such cap, which typically pulls the 15–30 day range toward its lower end.
  1. Week 1–2

    Consultation and measured survey

A designer visits, measures the space and checks what the existing services and structure allow.

  2. Week 1–2

    Design, 3D and specification

Layout options, 3D views and a material and hardware specification you approve before anything is ordered.

  3. Week 1–2

    Final measurement and production drawings

Re-measured after any demolition, because joinery is cut to the wall as built, not to the drawing.

  4. Week 1–3

    Factory production

Carcasses cut, edge-banded and assembled in the factory. Most of the duration sits here, and nothing is visible on site.

  5. Week 2–4

    Installation, finishing and snagging

Site installation, counter and hardware fitting, alignment, then a written snag list closed out before handover.

FAQ

Wardrobe Design: common questions

How do you decide the internal layout?+

By auditing what you actually store. Garment counts, saree and suit lengths, how much folded versus hanging, whether bedding has to live in there. A standard module is a guess.

Can a wardrobe go against an external wall?+

Yes, with a moisture barrier behind it and a ventilated plinth. Without those, monsoon damp travels through the masonry into the back panel.

Are mirror shutters a good idea?+

On one shutter, yes — it saves a separate mirror and makes the room read larger. Across the whole run it gets heavy and shows every mark.

What does wardrobe design cost in Pune?+

Indicatively ₹1,200 to ₹3,500 per sq ft, depending on specification. The three tiers on this page show what moves you between those figures. It is a planning range, not a quotation — a real number needs a site visit.

How long does wardrobe design take?+

15–30 days from design sign-off, not from your first enquiry. Design, selections and approvals come before that and depend on how quickly decisions are made.

What is included, and what is not?+

Included: walk-in closets, glass & lacquer shutters, internal lighting, plus 3D design, an itemised quote, project management and installation. Quoted separately: appliances, loose furniture beyond anything listed, and major structural work.

How do I compare your quote with a cheaper one?+

Ask both quotes to name the plywood grade line by line, the hardware brand, and whether painting, electrical work and debris removal are included. Price differences in this trade are almost always specification differences, not margin.

Is the first consultation really free?+

Yes — the first consultation and the measured site survey are free, with no obligation. Mon–Sat, 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM.

Do you provide a warranty?+

Yes, on workmanship, with manufacturer warranties on hardware and appliances passed through to you at handover. Our own crews do the service visits, so there is no third party to chase.
